ISS Europe in Poland – The  Future of the Semiconductor Industry

Starting from 2025, the Tri-City will become a meeting centre for global leaders in the semiconductor manufacturing sector and related industries. For the next two years, the Industry Strategy Symposium Europe (ISS Europe) will be organized in Poland. This is an extremely important event for our country and the Pomerania region.

What is ISS Europe

Industry Strategy Symposium Europe (ISS Europe) is a prestigious annual event that brings together business, science and technology leaders from around the world. The symposium is a place where the latest trends, strategies and challenges in the semiconductor industry are discussed. Participants have the opportunity to exchange knowledge, establish contacts and cooperate in setting the directions for the development of the European supply chain. ISS Europe is the place where decisions are made that affect the future of the semiconductor industry in Europe.

Poland’s growing importance  in the world of semiconductors

Poland is consistently building its recognition on the map of the semiconductor industry. This is mainly due to Intel’s recent decision to locate a chip integration and testing facility in Miękinia near Wrocław.

Intel’s $4.6 billion investment, as well as its 20-year Research and Development (R&D) Centre, underline Poland’s willingness to conduct advanced technology activities on a large scale. Intel’s R&D department, where the microprocessors are designed, is one of the largest of the 23 laboratories that the American giant located in Europe.

Tri-City – Sopot

In June 2023, the local government initiative coordinated by the Pomerania Development Agency became the country’s first member of SEMI (Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International – an international industrial organization that represents companies involved in the production of equipment and materials used in the semiconductor industry).

Apparently, this also influenced the choice of Sopot to host ISS Europe, an event that had previously been held in cities such as Berlin, Dublin, Brussels and Paris. This choice emphasises  Poland’s growing importance  in the semiconductor industry.

Challenges and opportunities for the European semiconductor industry

The leaders of the semiconductor sector are Asian countries: Taiwan, China and South Korea. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has shown that global supply chains are vulnerable to disruptions. As a consequence, more and more companies want to move or are already moving their production to Europe. They are also actively looking for alternatives to markets such as Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and France in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, which are very active in this industry.

The Tri-City – an ideal place for the semiconductor industry

With excellent road, rail, air and port connectivity, as well as the potential of renewable energy and skilled staff, the Tri-City is an ideal location for the semiconductor industry . With more than 14,000 employees in the electronics sector and 2,500 graduates in related fields, the agglomeration is  an attractive location for investors not only in this industry.
